"Envirotype" - Development

I am a very conceptual thinker so it was important for me to upload an example development sheet to portray how I solve problems, and ultimately get to my final concept.

"Persuade 3"

This was the outcome from the "persuade" project. Our task was to persuade one of our tutors to embrace new age culture. After alot of development and research I came to this as my outcome. I want to push this further, perhaps make two more posters so it becomes a series or a collection.

"Persuade 2"

Although just another developement sheet, this was so much fun to produce. It explodes off the page which gives it alot of character. I tried to experiment with just about anything I could find in college and at home. Some areas are flat graphics others are more 3D. This really gave me an insight into possible materials and essentially helped me reach the final piece.

"Persuade"

Another developement sheet focusing solely on type in different medias and reliefs.

"Quotes"

I wanted to find out about peoples deepest, darkest fears, things that make us really uncomfortable. I got everyone in my class to write down on a piece of paper their own fears. From that I placed them on an A3 layout. Realising the quotes were really just placed randomly I decided that to tie the whole project together they would be better suited in the letters F E A R - "fear". It still needs a few tweaks but its well on the way to being a strong final piece.

"Rejuvenate"

This is one of my development and experiment sheets from the project "rejuvenate". I always use alot of contextual referencing in my work, yes for inspiration but also for ideas, whats been done before, how has it been done? Consequently this is usually my springboard for ideas. It all takes off after heavy research.

"Life"

Another life drawing. I love the boldness here, alot of my drawings are quite sculptural I like being able to make heavy lines without worrying too much about the outcome.

"Blue"

Although graphic design is my first love its good to look back to appreciate how far you have come. I wanted to show a few drawings because this is still an important element of what I practice today. I love this image, its bold, and theres colour. I flicked through all my life drawings and this stood out because it was different. I find it quite reminiscent to Picasso's Blue Period.

"Exaggerate"

These are some final pieces from a project called "exaggerate". My springboard came in the form of an article on unwanted pregnacies and unprotected sex. We had to exaggerate and play visually with our chosen theme. Personally I find it astonishing that there still seems to be a lack of knowlegde and people still have unprotected sex not considering the consqeuences. Sure we all make mistakes but how may times are you willing to do the same thing? I am part of a generation that has had access to help, support, and sex education at a young age. No longer is sex a taboo subject, sex ed is a national scheme to ensure young people are aware. My red people represent irresponsibilty and unwanted babies.

"Personal Project"

This was another great brief I did just before I went into pathway. I saw an article in the times about a designer called Mark Fast (a Central St Martins graduate) who had gone against the "rules of runway" and used normal/average models in his shows instead of the standard painfully thin anorexic women. It grabbed my intention and I just knew I had to do my personal project on it, there was so much to run with visually. Mark Fast specialises in knitwear, and again I thought this could be an element to intergrate into final deisgns and concepts. This was one of many final ideas but I feel one of the strongest.

"Overheard Conversations"

For this project to be a success I had to become a master earwigger. We had to listen to other people's conversations whenever we had a free moment and fill an A6 sketchbook with our findings. The catch was in order to complete the snippets of conversation we had to illustrate them in the way in which they were said. For example, "mum I feel light headed" (above) was produced in a thin, light, airy cotton finish to convey the idea of floating, feeling weightless, and perhaps nauseous. Although the project has ended I've developed a complex of listening to conversations and then trying to figure out how I'd illustrate it.

"Kitchenalia"

This project required us to create the alphabet from objects or products you would associate with our brief title "kitchenalia". As a group we wanted to stray away from the idea of using kitchen utensils and focus more on the food itself and what properties it could lend to eventually creating a letterform. This was by far my favourite project, we spent almost a week working with different foods to discover which food type would represent the letters best. My table still smells of old whipped cream and mustard!
